Fee

Applications seeking information under the RTI Act may be sent along with the prescribed fee in Pesos (Ch$ 100). The fee needs to be deposited in the Embassy's Account No. 10278-4 with BANCO SANTANDER. The above calculation has been based on the official rate of exchange for the month of April 2013.

New provision for Indian citizens abroad: online fee (e-IPO)

All Indian citizens living abroad can file a Right to Information (RTI) application under the Right to Information Act 2005 by paying the fee online.

A service called e-IPO (Electronic Indian Postal Order) was launched with effect from 22 March 2013 so that Indian citizens abroad can buy an e-IPO by paying the fee online, to access information under the RTI Act 2005 from Central Public Authorities. Applicants can purchase an e-IPO and attach a print-out of it to their RTI application.

An Indian Postal Order can be purchased electronically by paying a fee of Rs. 10/- (Indian Rupees ten only) online through the e-Post Office portal or the India Post website, using a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card: www.indiapost.gov.in and www.epostoffice.gov.in.

Important advisories

  • Information provided under the Act is available to citizens of India only. Applications should be submitted along with documentary proof of Indian citizenship (like a copy of the personal particulars pages of the passport).
  • The mailing address of the Embassy is: Embassy of India, 971 Alcantara, PO Box 10433, Santiago.
  • As per Section 6(1)(a) of the RTI Act, 2005, a person who desires to obtain information under the Act is required to submit the application to the Information Officer of the “concerned public authority”. Applicants are therefore advised to send their requests to the Embassy only when the subject matter can reasonably be presumed to pertain to the Embassy. While Section 6(3) provides for the transfer of an application by a receiving PIO to another concerned PIO, this is meant to cover situations where the application is addressed to a PIO on the assumption that it has been directed to the concerned PIO. Where the information required obviously does not pertain to the Embassy, the application may be addressed to the concerned PIO directly.
