Death registration (Indian nationals only, free of charge)

The death of an Indian national should first be registered with the Embassy of India, Santiago by submitting:

  • Death certificate, apostilled and translated into English.
  • Misc. Consular Service Application Form PDF and the Death Registration Form PDF, duly filled in.
  • Copy of the detailed police report, in case of accidental or unnatural death.
  • Copy of the passport and valid Chilean RUT.
  • Original passport, for cancellation.
  • 2 photographs of the deceased (2 inches × 2 inches, white background).

No Objection Certificate for carrying mortal remains (CLP 24.900)

If the next of kin, relatives or family members wish to transport the ashes or mortal remains to India for religious or customary purposes, the Embassy issues a No Objection Certificate (NOC). The family member concerned should provide a consent letter to the Embassy, and:

  • Misc. Consular Service Application Form PDF and the Death Registration Form, duly filled in.
  • 2 photographs of the applicant (2 inches × 2 inches, white background).
  • Valid passport in original and copies of the passport pages with the personal particulars of the passport holder.
  • Original OCI/PIO card of the deceased and its photocopy, if held.
  • Apostilled cremation certificate.
  • Consent letter from the next of kin for local cremation, burial or transportation of mortal remains, attested by a notary.
  • Embalming certificate (mandatory if the mortal remains are to be carried to India).
  • Passport copy of the applicant.
  • Non-communicable disease certificate.
  • Proof of residence of the applicant.
  • Apostilled death certificate issued by the local authority. Translation is mandatory.

e-Clearance for Afterlife Remains (e-CARE) portal

To speed up the public health clearance for transporting human remains to India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has developed the e-CARE portal. It brings together the consignee, Airport Health Organisations and airlines on one interface, with automated alerts and live status tracking.

Who can apply

  • Any relative or friend of the deceased;
  • any organisation assisting the family, such as an NGO, funeral service, embalmer or the Indian Embassy;
  • any airline, on behalf of the family of the deceased.

Documents for the application

  • Embalming certificate;
  • death certificate (apostilled; translated if not in English);
  • NOC from the Indian Embassy;
  • cancelled passport of the deceased;
  • certificate of packaging of human remains as per WHO guidelines;
  • certificate of non-infectious disease from the health authority;
  • transit or burial permit.

The authorities may ask for these documents while approving the application. See the e-CARE user manual PDF and FAQ PDF.

Do not use the deceased person's passport to create a new user ID: that passport number could then not be submitted for transport of human remains. The name of the deceased cannot be used as the name of the applicant or consignee.
