NRI Certificate

Certificate of Non-Resident Indian status, including for admission of students under the NRI quota.

Processing time

Usually 1–2 days from receipt of all documents.

Eligibility

General

  • The applicant must be an Indian national with a valid Indian passport.
  • The applicant must have stayed more than 182 days in the country of residence in the current financial year.

Education benefit for students under the NRI quota

Eligible: NRIs; children of NRIs; or wards of NRIs.

A “ward” is only a minor under the bona fide guardianship of an NRI. Evidence of bona fide guardianship, and an affidavit to this effect, must be produced before the Embassy. Merely having looked after the student does not make a relative a guardian. The following are not bona fide guardians and are excluded for admission under the NRI quota:

  1. A first-degree relation of the student, including a real brother or sister, who is an NRI ordinarily living abroad (other than the mother and father);
  2. the nearest relations who consider the student as a ward, including real uncles and aunts on both sides, grandparents on both sides, and first-degree maternal and paternal cousins.

Documents required

  1. Misc. Consular Service Application Form PDF, for an NRI Certificate for yourself. Fill in all the information correctly: incomplete applications will be returned.
  2. For postal applications, all copies must be self-attested and the declaration of NRI status notarised. The original passport must be sent with the application; if your passport was renewed in the last 182 days of the financial year, send the old passport too.
  3. Original valid Indian passport and self-attested photocopies of the personal particulars pages (front and last).
  4. Copy of valid Chilean visa or Chilean RUT card.
  5. All photocopies must be legible; blurred, dark or illegible copies may not be accepted.
  6. For a minor under your guardianship: legal documents of bona fide guardianship (see eligibility above).
  7. A letter explaining your request for the NRI Certificate.
